Beautiful Minds Try It

A Try It inspired by the challenges faced by several of the Scouts in our Troop and across the United States that allows Scouts
to experience physical, emotional, and mental challenges that some individuals have to face each day.

Brownies: Must complete four (4) of the listed activities in order to complete the badge.
Note: If you are earning this Try It and are not a member of Troop 2702, complete the requirements, file a Try It affidavit for yourself or your Troop, and request patches from Troop 2702 Leadership.

1. Sign Language. 
Learn the Girl Scout Promise in Exact Sign Language (ESL) or American Sign Language (ASL).

2. Braille. 
Go to your local library or research Braille on the internet. (Be sure to follow the Internet Safety Code.) Write your name in Braille and share it with a friend, your parent, or your Troop.

3. Developmental Delays. 
Learn about three (3) different developmental delays such as learning disabilities (dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia), communication disorders, and pervasive developmental disorders (autism and Asperger’s Syndrome). Interview a special education teacher or have a special education teacher as a guest speaker at a meeting to share information about what it is like to have a developmental delay. Share what you learned with your Troop.

4. Everyday Obstacles. 
Try to move from a wheelchair to a stationary seat. Discuss how long it took you and what challenges you faced with a partner, parent, or your Troop.

5. Look Through My Eyes. 
Contact a local organization that assists visually impaired individuals and have a representative share about visual challenges and how you can help those with visual challenges.   

6. Dark Walkers.

Play this game and see what kind of results you get. After all players have taken a turn, notice where they have gone. Have a discussion about why visually impaired people use canes to assist them.
  • Players gather at the starting point.
  • Leader moves out about 50-70 feet.
  • First player closes her eyes.
  • Leader calls out to player to start walking.
  • Player walks directly towards where she believes the leader is standing.
  • When player believes she has walked the distance to the leader, she stops and raises his hand.
  • When the player raises her hand or when she is close to being in danger, the leader calls out to stop and the player stops and stays where she is. She can open her eyes.

7. Handicapped Accessibility. 
Learn about the Americans with Disabilities Act and providing handicapped access. Go on a tour of the facility or location where you have your meetings and note areas that may not be accessible for those with disabilities.

8. Do You Hear What I Hear? 
Learn about different types of hearing impairment and hearing loss.  Interview an audiologist or have an audiologist as a guest speaker at a meeting to find out about hearing loss and impairment. Learn what you can do to prevent hearing loss.

9. Serving Others.
Complete a service project to help others with disabilities such as collecting used eyeglasses.
